This course is designed to provide an introduction and overview of the competitive and dynamic sports industry today. Students will learn the skills and competencies required to pursue diverse career opportunities in sport and become acquainted with professional resources to support their future endeavors.
This course focuses on wellness and health promotion. Emphasis is on healthy behaviors in each of the five “Dimensions of Health:” mental, physical, social, emotional, environmental. The course stresses skills and application of health knowledge for optimal wellness and disease prevention. Active learning experiences included.
This course offers a foundation for ethical decision making and moral significance of sport. Students will apply ethical reasoning and critical thinking skills to help solve dilemmas and conflicts in sport. Issues ranging from fair play, sportsmanship, discrimination, accessibility, and performance enhancement will be explored.
SPT 2250Contemporary Issues in North American Sport3
This course will enable students to critically examine and analyze contemporary issues in sport from an interdisciplinary perspective. Current issues, trends, and challenges will be presented with the intent of provoking thought and stimulating debate so that students may identify their role in the resolution of issues within the sports industry.
Provides a conceptual, strategic, and technical overview of sports communications across all levels of sport. Students will apply effective communication skills, both written and orally, to different audiences. An emphasis on media relations, print and electronic content creation, social media, and other trending technologies will be covered.
This course is focused on enhancing individual performance and well-being through sport and physical activity. Topics include motor skill learning, motivational techniques, arousal regulation, team dynamics and cohesion, aggression, overcoming injury and addictive/unhealthy behaviors, exercise adherence, and psychological skills training.
This course will explore the multi-billion dollar world of sports marketing, branding, and sponsorship from the viewpoint of the team, the brand, and other major stakeholders. Students will learn how teams and brands work together to achieve their marketing goals and connect with fans.
The sport industry requires students who are trained in all aspects of sport business, including the critical area of sport sales. This course will provide practical professional sales techniques and philosophies utilized in several areas of sport including personal selling, ticket sales and sponsorships. Subsequently, the dynamics associated with building and fostering relationships necessary for consumer loyalty and a vibrant sport organization will be thoroughly examined.
This course is designed to provide students with the basic knowledge of the facility planning process, as well as how to manage specific sport facilities and the events staged in these facilities.
SPT 3200Administration of Intercollegiate Athletic Programs3
This course reviews the many administrative tasks an athletic administrator encounters in the administration of an intercollegiate athletic program and department. The course is designed for students majoring in sport management studies, business administration, or students who might be interested in a career in athletic administration at the collegiate level.
Gender in sports provides students with a comprehensive, multidisciplinary analysis of the problems, patterns, and processes associated with the involvement of women in sports. Students will be exposed to obvious and subtle issues in the sport domain that contribute to different opportunities and experiences for individuals based on gender.
Examines theories and techniques of coaching sports. Covers rules and regulations, fundamentals, organizational principles, specific conditioning programs scouting, technical tactics, and other topics.
This course is designed to provide an examination of effective leadership skills from multiple angles and perspectives. Students will examine general concepts in leadership by reviewing theory, principles, traits, and skills required of a leader in the field of sport management.
This course explores the legal responsibilities of sport organizations, administrators, coaches, and facility managers, including issues related to liability, negligence, contracts, and participant safety. The course also focuses on identifying potential risks in sport settings and developing effective policies and procedures to reduce legal exposure.
SPT 4050Economics & Financial Management in Sport3
This course explores conventional and innovative methods of revenue acquisition and financial management of sport organizations. Topics include financial accountability and budgeting of leagues and organizations, competitive balance, anti-trust regulation, economic impact of events, stadium/venue financial management, and player salaries.
This course provides an overview of the policies, structures, and administrative practices that guide the management and governance of sport organizations. Students will examine how sport policies are developed, implemented, and evaluated at local, national, and international levels.
This course is designed to examine risk management in sports and recreation. It will provide a comprehensive knowledge base for those sports management professionals charged with the responsibility of ensuring the safety of participants and spectators. The course covers a wide range of risk management and safety issues including: legal concerns, emergency action plans, waivers, facilities, equipment, aquatics, supervision, and training. Students will receive clear and detailed explanations of issues to consider before making an informed decision on risk management.
This course provides the foundation necessary to plan, evaluate, organize, and administrate sport-related programs in a variety of settings. Specific areas of concentration include mission statements, needs assessment, program planning and development, goals and objectives, and program assessment and evaluation in school, university, community, and other professional settings.

This course provides the student with a basic understanding of the developments, trends and social processes that explain the widely popular sporting experience of society today.
This course is the Sport Management student’s capstone experience. Students will attain an internship site based on their unique educational needs, experience, and professional aspirations. Internship students will work directly with Sport Management professionals in one or more work settings.
