ENG 572Detective Fiction. On sufficient demand3

A seminar on the origins, history, and works of the popular genre. In this course, we will closely examine detective stories and novels, paying particular attention to the history of the genre and its social and cultural influences. We will also consider the meaning of "genre" and the idea of "genre literature" and discuss its usefulness for teaching essential narrative elements like voice, plot, and setting. We will begin with the protodetective story Oedipus Rex, moving from there to works by Edgar Allen Poe and Wilkie Collins, who are generally accepted as the inventors of the genre. We will then explore detective fiction's "golden age" (Arthur Conan Doyle to Agatha Christie) and the American tradition of hardboiled detective fiction (Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, etc.), ending with an examination of contemporary works, including film.
