EDCO 740Diagnosis and Treatment of Addictive Behaviors3
The psychological and psychosocial effects of drug addiction and addictive behaviors on individuals, couples, and families are examined. Emphasis is placed on counseling skills and techniques.
This course provides a broad overview of the three main approaches used in social science research: quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods. More specifically, emphasis is placed on students becoming scholarly consumers of research, able to make appropriate literature-research question-results interpretation-application assertions.
This course enables students to understand many facets of international cross-cultural counseling. Students will learn how counseling can help global workers and those in unfamiliar cultures to adapt, copy, and grow through the culture stress of global work. Students will learn some of the nuances of telemental health applications on a global scale, as well as some of the confidentiality and security concerns. Students will also be introduced to resources and agencies which support this population.
This course enables students to understand the services and experiences that best prepare people for resilience in global cross-cultural work. Students will become knowledgeable about member care counseling and issues spanning the timeline of a worker's service from realizing a calling for the work through transitioning back into their country of origin indefinitely after a tenure of service. Topics covered will include pre-field screening and assessment, counseling and assessing for mid-service issues, and providing post-service transitional care. Modalities of member care counseling and debriefing will also be covered. Various models for providing services will be examined, including brief solution focused.

This course equips students with an understanding of the unique role that member care personnel play in supporting and counseling global cross-cultural workers. Students will become knowledgeable about member care counseling and issues spanning the timeline of a worker's service with emphasis on building resilience and longevity in the work. Topics covered will include issues, ethics, best practices model, definition, scope, and acculturation. Students will also study issues related to families, singles, and third culture kids.
EDCO 753Engaging the Spiritual Realities of Member Care Counseling3
This course prepares students to engage the complex and multifaceted spiritual realities that characterize cross-cultural ministry. Student will develop a practical theological understanding of the topics of theodicy and spiritual warfare, with an emphasis on ways these topics impact front-line ministry workers. The distinctive tools and methods of spiritual direction will be presented as a framework for understanding and promoting the resilience and spiritual formation of global cross-cultural workers.
This course provides an overview of the aspects of stress and trauma, including examination of seminal texts and concepts. In addition, a foundational understanding of trauma counseling, theories, and interventions will be offered, together with definitions, causative factors, incidence rates, and idiomatic factors of a number of traumatic events. Students will consider how science informs the delivery of effective counseling theory and technique for these clients with the goal of integrating ethical, effective, and biblically grounded care.
An overview of personality and diagnostic assessment instruments. Students will learn testing procedures as well as interpretation and application of results in diagnosis and treatment planning.

An in-depth examination of the types of assessment used in marital counseling. Students will learn how to select the best instrument for a particular situation, how to administer these, and how to interpret the results.

This course studies issues that affect the relationship and decision to marry in premarital counseling, as well as problematic factors in marriage such as marital distress and dissolution. Ranging from such endemic issues as domestic violence to preparation for both manmade and natural disasters, this course provides an in-depth study of the onset, duration, and appropriate interventions for various crises encountered in pastoral counseling.
