ENG 312Devils Rebels, and Angels: John Milton’s Paradise Lost (3 cr.)

This course explores the England’s most famous and most complex epic, John Milton’s Paradise Lost , first published in ten books in 1667 and then revised into its current twelve-book format in 1674. Milton rewrites the origin story of Adam and Eve’s fall from Eden to account for the fallen condition of humanity. His psychological insight is both startling and demanding, not least because he focuses as much on the reader’s experience of reading the epic as he does on his characters. We will read slowly, learning the conventions of epic and the devices of poetry as we proceed. Our focus throughout will be on Milton’s interest in choice. We will also confront the theological and historical contexts of the epic. The goal is to read Milton’s famous poem with both pleasure and understanding. Liberal arts

ENG 357The Scientific Revolution in English Literature (3 cr.)

This course examines the way that the seventeenth-century’s new technologies of science both influenced and were influenced by literary developments. These technologies–particularly optical lenses, but also air pumps, and chemical and anatomical advances–provided new ways of conceiving both the universe and humanity. They were immediately put to use as political metaphors on the stage, as religious analogies in sermons, and in narrative technique in fiction. Studying their influence on literature of the period also helps us see more clearly the moral and religious concern these technologies sparked–concern that has only intensified today as additional technologies continue to challenge our understanding of ourselves and our place in an increasingly complex world. ENG 101 Cardinal Core Curriculum Category: Individual Expression SUNY Framework: Humanities Semester(s) Offered: Varies
ENG 385Canadian Immigration Literature (3 cr.)

This course focuses on the literature produced by the immigrant writers of Canada. In the 2016 census, 21.9% of Canadians were immigrants. The majority of immigrants to Canada settle in Toronto–nearly half were born outside Canada, and after Miami, Toronto hosts the second-highest proportion of immigrants in the world. However, immigrants are fundamental to each region of Canada. Through literature, students will learn key factors about the immigrant experience: assimilation, diversity, ethnic communities, racism, poverty, social mobility, generational conflict, refugees, multicultural and immigration policies. Multicultural literature often criticizes Canada’s “multicultural dream;” these necessary critiques can point the way to greater social harmony. Immigration is a global issue, often contentious, that requires the discussion that literature inspires. Liberal Arts
