Fall/Spring This course is structured to provide an overview of entrepreneurial activities relevant to both startup companies and existing business expansions. It is applicable to students in all academic disciplines interested in starting or owning a business, while maintaining relevance for existing business owners looking to gain an edge. The course details the fundamental principles and processes of entrepreneurship. It will focus on entrepreneurs, entrepreneurial thinking, idea generation, market evaluation, financing options, business essentials, the execution phase, growth strategies, and exit plan development. 3 credit hours

ENT 220The Entrepreneurial Marketplace3

Spring This course focuses on two critical issues for entrepreneurs: the evaluation of market potential during the concept development and business plan stage, and the challenges of growing sales of high‐potential ventures. Topics include the basics of market analysis, researching markets and market segments, translating assumptions on buyer’s need into product recognition and acceptance curves, the impact of product life cycles, product/service validation, and entrepreneurial pricing and advertising. Students who plan to also take ENT 260 are encouraged to take both ENT 220 and ENT 260 during the same semester.

ENT 260Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management3

Spring This course is designed to review and analyze the role of entrepreneurial management in today’s marketplace. The course will focus on the major traditional and nontraditional theories that have been developed in this field. This course will also examine unique challenges and problems that entrepreneurs face in managing their businesses in today’s competitive marketplace. Topics such as leadership, funding sources, capital investment, networking, and diversity will be discussed. Case analysis, experiential exercises, and readings will supplement the coursework. Students who plan to also take ENT 220 are encouraged to take both ENT 220 and ENT260 during the same semester.

ENT 350Creativity and Innovation3

Fall This course explores the underlying premises of creativity, basic frameworks and concepts, and the obstacles to creativity. The central focus of this course is on innovation that leads to launching a new business venture; improving the potential of small businesses; or reinvigorating a larger, more mature company. This course challenges students to risk making mistakes in their quest in developing ideas that may lead to a true innovation of a product, service, or process. Students are given the opportunity to integrate theoretical perspectives learned in readings and classroom activities with hands-on experiences.

This course equips students with an understanding of social enterprises, their operations, and the unique opportunities they offer to creative and innovative leaders. Aspiring social entrepreneurs will learn to employ business strategies to address social and environmental issues often overlooked by the marketplace and unsustainable in the nonprofit sector. The course explores the fundamentals of social entrepreneurship, emphasizing the pivotal role these entrepreneurs play in driving positive change in their community. Throughout the course, students will develop the traits and skills required for social entrepreneurship, craft a narrative that conveys the venture’s vision and mission, engage stakeholders, and recognize their contributions, utilize a variety of tools in the social entrepreneur’s toolkit, and create a comprehensive plan for a successful social venture.

Spring ENT490 is like an internship for students who are engaged in starting their own business, particularly pre-launch activities (e.g., identifying market needs, researching financial viability of the business venture to meet that need, marshaling the resources to launch a business and launching the business). Students enrolled in this course will complete the McNees Accelerator through the JD Brown Center for Entrepreneurship. The faculty supervisor will support the students’ activities and assign supplemental related assignments. This course must be taken in the same semester as the students’ pre-launch activities.
