Effective Date 01/01/2026 What historical processes have shaped today’s Middle East (also known as Southwest Asia and North Africa)? This course focuses on the history of a region stretching from Morocco in the West and Afghanistan in the East over the period of roughly 1500 to the present. In doing so, we examine political, social, and cultural history through the lens of “media” in translation, such as manuscripts, memoirs, maps, travel narratives, films, music, internet media, and more.

Using sources including scholarly texts, memoirs, newspapers, songs, short stories, posters, we study the history of this region from the mid-1800s to the present.
