Effective Date 01/01/2021 This course studies the main art works produced in the 19th and 20th centuries: Goya, Picasso, Dali, Miro, Tapies, Chillida, Villanueva, Gaudi and Calatrava will be contemplated from an eminently cultural view. In addition to analyzing the different productions from a technical viewpoint, they will serve as models to understand social and cultural trends of the period.

Effective Date 08/01/2026 This course explores the history and culture of Spain between 1500 and 1700, when Spain became a major European and even global power, as well as an important center of cultural production. This was Spain’s so-called “Golden Age,” but it was certainly not “golden” for everyone involved. The literature, art, and architecture or the period will help us understand Spain from multiple perspectives. Requisites Must have completed 3 credits of SPAN 3400-3430.

In East Asia, it was the Spaniards who were the “barbarians,” in the eyes of the highly sophisticated people of China and Japan. This course explores what happens when we center the study of Spanish imperialism on the Pacific rather than the Atlantic. Requisites Must have completed 3 credits of SPAN 3400-3430. The tasks of construction these new countries were numerous, beginning with the creation of national identities.
Effective Date 08/01/2009 The Colloquium allows DMPs in Spanish to meet regularly with the DMP coordinator to discuss research strategies, documentation styles, and structure and style in extended expository writing as they are working independently on a thesis. It also provides a forum for presenting and discussing work-in-progress.
Effective Date 01/01/2010 Distinguished majors in Spanish will meet individually with their thesis advisors to discuss progress and revise drafts of their theses. At the end of the semester, they will present the results of their research in a public forum.
