transfer_creditTransfer and Exam Credit Credit by Examination Undergraduate students currently registered at NC State may request an examination for course credit in a course whether enrolled in that course or not, under the conditions described below. Departments are encouraged to offer credit by examination in all courses but have the prerogative of excluding certain courses, which are demonstrably unsuited for credit by examination. The academic standards for credit by examination will be commensurate with the academic standards for the course. If a student’s performance on the examination is judged to be of C- or higher quality, the department head will notify the Department of Registration and Records on a Grade Report Form that the student has received “credit by examination” for the course. A student who receives credit by examination in a course in which that student is currently enrolled must officially drop that course no later than the last day to drop for the term enrolled. If the course credit by examination would enable a student to complete the final requirements for a degree, that student need not be registered in order to receive the credit. Once a student has failed a course, has failed a previous credit by examination attempt, or has been enrolled in a course past the last day to drop, the student may not attempt credit by examination for that course. The full regulation (https://policies.ncsu.edu/regulation/reg-02-50-01/) on Credit by Examination is available on the Policies, Rules and Regulations website. Transfer Credit Transcripts of college course credit for new transfer students and for NC State students who have taken course work at another institution are evaluated by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions in consultation with the deans of the NC State colleges to determine how the work applies to fulfilling the graduation requirements of each student’s intended major. Only courses where the student receives a grade of C or better will be considered for transfer credit. Students admitted to an NC State undergraduate degree program who wish to take courses at another institution must obtain prior endorsement from their academic department and prior written approval from their college’s associate dean (or dean’s office) in order to insure that the transfer credits will apply toward specif graduation requirements. Transfer credit is not recorded on former students’ permanent records until after they have been readmitted and Transfer and Exam Credit 1 have re-enrolled at NC State. Students should not assume that transfer credits will be accepted, and should speak with their academic advisor. How transfer credit applies to a student’s degree is determined by the student's academic department and college associate dean’s office.2026-2027catalog.ncsu.edu

transfer_credit2 3.1 Graduate School Minimum Requirements Transfer of Credits 1. Transfer of graduate credits earned at other universities. A course that was completed at another college or university may be considered for transfer to a master’s program provided that: a. The course is classified as a graduate course. Courses with grades of B- or lower will not be allowed to transfer. Exceptions are allowed for transfer from international institutions if the department or program provides the Graduate School with adequate documentation that the course is relevant to the graduate degree and comparable to an equivalent course at NC State, and that the course was taught by faculty who are qualified to teach at the level of a master’s degree. That grade will be taken as the minimum grade for transfer in lieu of the “B” noted in 1(d) above. A course that was completed while the student was enrolled as an undergraduate at NC State University may be considered for transfer to a master’s program provided that it is at the 400-level (subject to the restrictions state in subsection D.4 above) or higher, that the earned grade is B or better, that it was not counted toward fulfillment of undergraduate requirements, and that it is verified by the undergraduate coordinator and recommended by the DGP. Courses with grades of B- or lower will not be allowed to transfer. A graduate course that was completed while the student was enrolled in a previous graduate program at NC State University may be considered for transfer to a master’s program, provided that: (a) The course was a letter-graded (“A,” “B,” “C,” etc.) 500- or 700-level course and that the grade is B or better. Courses with grades of B- or lower will not be allowed to transfer; and (b) it was not taken as a part of a completed master’s degree at another institution. A graduate course that was completed while the student was enrolled in PBS status at NC State University may be considered for transfer to a master’s program provided that it is at the 500 level or higher and that the grade is B or better. Courses with grades of B- or lower will not be allowed to transfer. A maximum of 12 credit hours taken while in PBS status may be transferred into a master’s degree program. Submitting Transfer Credit for Graduate School Approval When the graduate program submits the online Plan of Graduate Work through MyPack Portal, the DGP submits a letter requesting that any transfer credit be accepted as part of the student’s master’s program. Students whose previous master’s was combined with a three-year bachelor’s degree from a non-Bologna institution to meet the minimum requirements for admission will not be entitled to this 18 credit allowance and will not be considered to have a previous master’s.2026-2027catalog.ncsu.edu
transfer_credit7. A graduate course that was completed while the student was enrolled in PBS status at NC State University may be considered for transfer to a doctoral program provided that it is a 500- or 700- level course and that the grade is B or better (see Section 2.3 (https:// catalog.ncsu.edu/graduate/graduate-handbook/admissions/) for information on admission to PBS classification). Courses with grades of B- or lower will not be allowed to transfer. A maximum of 12 credit hours taken while in PBS status may be transferred into a doctoral degree program. Transfer of Credits 1. Transfer of course credits into a doctoral program is always at the discretion of a given program’s DGP and requires their approval to be included within the degree requirements for a given program. Some programs might not allow transfer of credit. 2. Transfer of up to 18 graduate credits, inclusive of master’s credits, earned at other universities: a. A course that was completed at another US college or university may be considered for transfer to a doctoral program provided that: i. The course is classified as a graduate course. Courses with grades of B- or lower are not eligible for transfer. vi. Courses taken at other institutions, other than those approved as interinstitutional or other preapproved coursework, such as study abroad, during the time a student is enrolled in a doctoral program at NC State are not eligible for transfer. b. Transfer from international institutions is allowed if the department or program provides the Graduate School with adequate documentation that the course is relevant to the graduate degree and comparable to an equivalent course at NC State. A course that was completed while the student was enrolled as an undergraduate at NC State University may be considered for transfer into a doctoral program provided that it is: a. at the 500-level or higher, that the earned grade is B or better. A graduate course that was completed while the student was enrolled in PBS status at NC State University may be considered for transfer into a doctoral program provided that it is at the 500 level or higher and that the grade is B or better. transfer_creditIt should be viewed as a “living document” that reflects changes that may occur as students continue to develop and refine their academic programs B. Contents of a Graduate Degree Audit The Graduate Degree Audit includes: 1. a list of the coursework to be undertaken 2. accurate information about any transfer credits to be used for the degree. Any request to include transfer credit should be submitted to the Graduate School prior to the start of the student’s graduate program or no later than before the end of the first semester C. Timing As the Graduate Degree Audit serves as a guide to promote successful progression through a given graduate program, it is important that various components of it be completed in a timely manner.2026-2027catalog.ncsu.edu
transfer_creditTransfer credit from other institutions is not allowed. A maximum of 9 credits taken in Post-Baccalaureate Studies (PBS) may be transferred into a graduate certificate. A maximum of 6 credits taken as an NC State undergraduate student may be transferred into a graduate certificate; these 6 hours may not be counted towards the NC State undergraduate degree. The grade in the course(s) must be a B or better; courses with grades of B- or lower will not be allowed to transfer. 2. Transferring Certificate Coursework into a Degree Program a. Graduate certificate courses taken prior to enrollment in an NC State master’s or doctoral degree program may be transferred into that degree program so long as eighteen hours remain unique to the master’s and thirty-six hours to the doctorate. This process provides an s exception to the rule according to which, when certificate coursework is transferred into a master’s degree, 18 hours must remain unique to the degree (see Handbook 3.13.C.2.a (p. )). It is not an exception to the rule governing the obtention of multiple certificates (see Handbook 3.13.B.10 (p. )). 1. Requirements a. For certificates to be stacked, programs must submit a memorandum to the Graduate School outlining the specifics of the certificates to be used and how they map onto the curriculum of an existing master’s degree. e. No more than 12 hours per certificate can be transferred into the master’s regardless of the number of credits required by each certificate.2026-2027catalog.ncsu.edu
transfer_creditF. Post-Baccalaureate Studies (PBS) Up to 12 credits earned in PBS courses with at least a grade of “B” can be officially transferred into a student’s program; these courses are also e included in the GPA. To discourage excessive and/or unwarranted use of incomplete grades and extensions for an individual student, an extension of an incomplete grade will not be granted by the Graduate School if the student holds incomplete grades in other courses at the time of the request. H. External Transfer Credit Except in the case of interinstitutional courses, grades transferred from another institution will not be included in the GPA.2026-2027catalog.ncsu.edu

Transfer Credittransfer_creditTransfer Credit Transcripts of college course credit for new transfer students and for NC State students who have taken course work at another institution are evaluated by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions in consultation with the deans of the NC State colleges to determine how the work applies to fulfilling the graduation requirements of each student’s intended major. Only courses where the student receives a grade of C or better will be considered for transfer credit. Students admitted to an NC State undergraduate degree program who wish to take courses at another institution must obtain prior endorsement from their academic department and prior written approval from their college’s associate dean (or dean’s office) in order to insure that the transfer credits will apply toward specific graduation requirements. Transfer credit is not recorded on former students’ permanent records until after they have been readmitted and have re-enrolled at NC State. Students should not assume that transfer credits will be accepted, and should speak with their academic advisor. Credit accepted for transfer from another institution is shown only as credit hours and is not included in the computation of the grade point average. A list of courses and how they transfer to NC State from other institutions on the Office of Undergraduate Admissions website . Please note this website speaks only to the general transferability of the course work. How transfer credit applies to a student’s degree is determined by the student's academic department and college associate dean’s office. Transfer of Creditstransfer_creditTransfer of Credits Transfer of graduate credits earned at other universities. A course that was completed at another college or university may be considered for transfer to a master’s program provided that: The course is classified as a graduate course. It was completed while the student was in a graduate or post-baccalaureate classification. It was not taken as a part of a previous master’s degree program at another institution. The grade in the course is B or better. Courses with grades of B- or lower will not be allowed to transfer. The college or university is accredited by one of the following six U.S. regional accrediting agencies: the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, the New England Association of Colleges and Schools, the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, the Northwest Association of Colleges and Schools, or the Western Association of Colleges and Schools. Course(s) must have been taken within 6 years of the planned NCSU graduation year. Exceptions are allowed for transfer from international institutions if the department or program provides the Graduate School with adequate documentation that the course is relevant to the graduate degree and comparable to an equivalent course at NC State, and that the course was taught by faculty who are qualified to teach at the level of a master’s degree. Where the grading system and grading culture in such institutions differ from that at NC State, students may (with the help of the Study Abroad Office) provide a letter to the Graduate School establishing the minimum average grade required for a graduate degree from that institution. That grade will be taken as the minimum grade for transfer in lieu of the “B” noted in 1(d) above. Transfer of graduate credits earned while enrolled in an undergraduate program at NC State University. No credit will be allowed for a course completed in an undergraduate classification at another institution. Courses with grades of B- or lower will not be allowed to transfer. (NOTE: Students admitted into a Accelerated Bachelor’s/Master’s (ABM) program may use up to 12 hours of graduate credit [500 or 700 level] to satisfy requirements for both the bachelor’s and the master’s degrees.) Transfer of graduate credits earned while enrolled in a previous graduate degree program at NC State University. Transfer of Post-Baccalaureate Studies (PBS) graduate credits earned at NC State University. A graduate course that was completed while the student was enrolled in PBS status at NC State University may be considered for transfer to a master’s program provided that it is at the 500 level or higher and that the grade is B or better. Courses with grades of B- or lower will not be allowed to transfer. All PBS credits that are used to satisfy requirements of a specific master’s degree must be earned before the student is admitted to that degree program. A maximum of 12 credit hours taken while in PBS status may be transferred into a master’s degree program. See Section 2.3 for information on admission to PBS classification. If a student’s graduate degree program is terminated, s/he cannot use courses taken in PBS status after termination for credit toward the same graduate degree program.2026-2027catalog.ncsu.edu
