This course is an introduction to fieldwork in archeology including excavation, survey, analysis and laboratory processing. Anthropological theory as applied to material culture, New and Old World prehistory and the history of archaeology will also be covered. Students will receive training in all practical aspects of archaeology and an understanding of the concepts and ideas archaeologists utilize in interpreting both historic and prehistoric sites. This course is designed to introduce students to the field of ecological anthropology and to help them gain an understanding of the complex and often competing relationships between social systems and ecosystems. Special emphasis is placed on human adaptation, the role of humans in the transformation of nature, threats from contemporary risks, and strategies of natural and cultural conservation including co-management of resources.
