This course provides an overview of communication disorders (CD) including speech, language, cognition and hearing along with their effects on patients, families and caregivers. The classifications, descriptions and pathologies of these disorders, as well as their evaluation and treatments, will be discussed. This course is an overview of the acoustical and physiological bases of speech production. The International Phonetic Alphabet will be introduced. In addition, this course includes a broad coverage of phonetic transcription, place and manner of articulation, air stream mechanism and speech perceptions for the purpose of clinical application. This course is the study of speech production along with the acoustic characteristics of speech and hearing. Emphasis will be on normal speech perception, speech science theory, instrumentation and production. Credit(s): 3
This course provides guided activities and assignments to direct students through observations of speech, language and cognitive evaluation and treatment sessions. Students will observe evaluation and therapy sessions of a licensed, certified speech-language pathologist. There is a classroom component and video based observations may be utilized. A minimum of 25 observation hours across disorders, therapy locations, ethnicity and age is required for successful completion of this course. Credit(s): 1
This course provides students with methods for treatment of developmental speech and language disorders including: articulation and phonology, receptive and expressive language delay from infants through adolescence, autism spectrum disorder and sensory feeding disorder. Emphasis will be on treatment methods and strategies that are within the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) Scope of Practice guidelines along with evidence-based treatment approaches. This course provides students with methods of treatment for persons with acquired communication disorders including: aphasia, cognitive-communicative disorders, stuttering, voice, dysarthria, apraxia and dysphagia. This course will provide students with a definition and explanations of the American Speech and Hearing Association’s (ASHA) Code of Conduct, Code of Ethics and Scope of Practice for SLPAs. Students will be presented with case studies and a variety of assignments to compare and contrast best practices when interacting with their clients, colleagues, supervisors and caregivers. SLP 438Speech Language Pathology Assistant Internship3
This course provides students seeking a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Certificate with the 100 clinical practicum hours required for American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) certification for Speech Language Pathology Assistants (SLPA). Clinical interaction hours will be earned through the Shenandoah University Clinic and/or community placements with supervision by a licensed and ASHA certified speech-language pathologist. Students will gain experience with clients from diverse backgrounds and disorders, across the lifespan. Credit(s): 3
