Includes study of the composition and forms of fibers, the manufacture and properties of resins, and the purposes and properties of core materials. Introduction to nano composites, graphene’s, and other cutting-edge materials and their uses. Introduce properties such as molecular, chemical, crystalline structures, and metallurgy. Minimum
This course provides the students with an opportunity to demonstrate their skills in application to advanced manufacturing. This will be a collaborative hands-on program designing, producing drawings, and fabricating the tooling and hardware provided through a series of industrial mock scenarios. This course is a culmination of previous courses taken to prepare them for success in the varied manufacturing industries. This course will provide an opportunity to learn each phase of manufacturing through a project-based scenario. Metallic machining collaboration, composite fabrication, additive manufacturing, tooling, and assembly. This capstone course will also include quality assurance and measurement validation, document control, and business development
This course provides an in-depth dive into additive manufacturing also known as 3D printing. Included in this course is an introduction to materials and methods used in additive manufacturing as well as the applications in advanced manufacturing. This course content includes a survey of mechanical concepts, types of printing options currently available in the market, plastics, metals, resins, and a look at future materials and processes. In depth look at current industry practices, industry challenges, and applications. Different types of printing, stereolithography, FDM, laser sintering, machines, and operations. Programming, slicing, and hands on laboratory work. This course utilizes parametric modeling and slicing software for hands on project development.
This course goes deeper into the material properties used in advanced manufacturing. To gain a basic understanding of the microstructure of solids. Structure-properties-manufacturing-design relationships are emphasized. Materials selection design project. Structures, properties, and processing of ceramics; structure, properties and processing of polymers and composites; electrical, thermal, magnetic, and optical properties of solids; and corrosion.
This course overviews the identification and selection of non-destructive testing methods and inspection processes to support quality assurance. Composite testing for varied manufacturing industry applications will be evaluated, including Compression tests, Bearing-strength test, Flatwise tension test and Short-beam shear test. This course considers the capabilities of most common testing methods in composite NDT applications such as Visual Testing (VT or VI), Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Thermography, Radiographic Testing (RT), Electromagnetic Testing (ET), Acoustic Emission (AE), and Shearography Testing and the demonstrated advantages and disadvantages of these methods. Inspection methods used by the NDT will be explored including dye-penetrant, eddy current inspection (EI), ultra-sound, and magnetic particle inspections (MPI). Familiarization with basic heat-treating processes, spacecraft hardware, materials and measurements will be included.
