This course introduces students to the supervisor’s role in organizations. This course emphasizes the development skills necessary to achieve organizational objectives using interpersonal communication and Human Resources policies and procedures necessary to hire, document, motivate, correct, and evaluate employees. The course also examines challenging situations facing today’s supervisors, including ensuring the safety and health of employees, effective conflict resolution, and leveraging diversity for productive team environment.
Students will learn formal and interpersonal communication skills necessary for managers and team leaders as applied to business settings. This course will also provide students an understanding of how all management communications has an effect on the behaviors and beliefs of their team.
This course will examine risk assessment and management techniques, methods, and models used in industry to minimize, control and communicate risks, including conducting various risk management protocols. This course is designed to develop an understanding of the functions and skills needed by supervisors and managers for managing Human Resources (HR). Students will examine challenges, opportunities and trends relating to equal employment opportunity, federal guidelines regarding protected classes, jobs, labor, training, employee health and safety, compensation and employee relations, and learn to recognize and properly apply HR policies and procedures in the workplace.

In this course, students will learn ways to do more with less; less human effort, equipment, time, and space; while coming closer to providing customers with exactly what they want. Students will be challenged to identify and eliminate various forms of waste through their understanding and application of the five principles of lean thinking (value, value stream, flow, pull and perfection) and the 5S method of workplace layout for manufacturing.
This course will provide an overview of the unique leadership skills and issues facing nonprofit organizations. This course will also understand the mission of the organization and its service to society. Students will evaluate financial management issues significant for nonprofit sustainability such as fundraising and earned income ventures. Lastly, students will also explore marketing and communication techniques, and the role of the governing board in a nonprofit organization.
This course will provide students an Experiential Learning (EL) opportunity. Students will apply the knowledge and skills that they are learning in the classroom in a work setting with an Industry Partner. Projects will provide practical experience and build a portfolio showcasing progress towards the mastery of these skills. This course is designated as an Occupational Lecture/Lab course, which represents a minimum time commitment of 67.5 hours of in-class work and 67.5 hours of self-directed work to be completed with the assistance of the student’s Industry Partner. While set by the individual instructor, students should expect a course commitment of approximately 180 hours or more.
