DESL 1501Automotive and Diesel Industrial Safety Standards3

Students are introduced to industrial safety and pollution prevention practices specific to the automotive and diesel service industries. It also provides a broad overview of standard industry operating practices and exposure to preparatory steps students should be making as they prepare to enter the workforce in the auto and diesel service industries. This course also covers OSHA-10 general industry training intended to help educate workers to predict, prevent, identify, and stop possible common worksite hazards. Students will have the ability to earn the OSHA-10 credential. Course Fees: $100.00

DESL 1540Heavy Duty Electrical System5

This course introduces students to general electrical/electronic systems and fundamental electrical theories and procedures is it pertains to the diesel industry. Students will identify methods to locate and interpret wiring diagrams, and explore diagnostic methods and repair procedures for individual electrical circuits on vehicles. This course will also cover the electrical systems as it relates to batteries, starting systems, charging systems, lighting systems, instrument cluster and driver information systems, cab and chassis electrical systems and an introduction to electrified vehicle high voltage safety. This course introduces students to the specific applications of diesel engines in the light-duty market for powertrains commonly found in passenger vehicles and light duty trucks. Students will explore engine design and construction, engine management systems, emissions, diagnostics and troubleshooting relative to light duty diesel powered vehicles. Students will also engage in common service, maintenance, and repair practices on modern light duty diesel engines and related vehicle systems. This course introduces students to brake, suspension and steering system theories and procedures as they pertain to the diesel industry. Students demonstrate knowledge and perform tasks in regard to general braking system components, air brakes and air supply and service systems, hydraulic brakes, parking brake systems, power assist systems, electronically assisted safety controls such as vehicle dynamic brake systems, antilock brakes system (ABS), wheel bearings, steering columns, steering pump and gear units, steering linkage, suspension systems, wheel alignment, wheels and tires, frames, and coupling devices. This course also encompasses Department of Transportation approved procedures for vehicle highway safety regulations and preventative maintenance inspection, (PMI).
