An introductory course covering the history of radiography, introductory radiographic equipment and X-ray production, radiation protection and safety; radiographic and general medical terminology; and chest, abdomen, and upper extremity radiographic procedures. Students become knowledgeable regarding professional aspects of radiography including professional practice standards, ethics, and legal issues. During the last half of the semester, students begin clinical rotations and by semester end, competency and proficiency in chest, abdomen, and upper extremity radiography are achieved.Course Fees: $255.00

RDTK 1583Radiographic Procedures I3

Students are provided with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to perform radiographic examinations of the shoulder girdle, lower extremity, pelvic girdle, spine, and bony thorax. Students begin to recognize alternative projections needed for imaging diverse populations, including pediatric, geriatric, and trauma patients. Students are introduced to gastrointestinal (GI) and genitourinary (GU) imaging including the associated contrast media. The course covers radiographic anatomy, positioning techniques, and image analysis, ensuring that students are well-prepared for clinical practice in radiography.

In this course, students outline the physical theories of X-ray production and the atomic interactions which take place during the radiologic image acquisition process. Students are provided with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to perform invasive radiographic procedures of gastrointestinal (GI), genitourinary (GU), biliary, and female reproductive systems, as well as arthrography, myelography. The course covers radiographic anatomy, positioning techniques, and image analysis of these exams. Students become familiar with the safe usage of stationary and mobile fluoroscopic equipment in a surgical setting. The basic concepts of bone densitometry (DXA) will also be introduced.

Students are provided with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to perform radiographic examinations of the cranium, facial bones, and sinuses. In addition to headwork, students are introduced to imaging of the circulatory system. The course covers radiographic anatomy, positioning techniques, and image analysis of these exams. Students build upon their knowledge of alternative imaging for diverse patient populations and conditions. This course will also cover the following requirements of the Laramie County Community College Transition Experience: Students create a post-graduation plan and apply financial planning and transfer or career-readiness tasks in a way that supports their personal goals.

Students learn about the components of digital and fluoroscopic imaging equipment and evaluate their effects on radiographic qualities. Students follow the image acquisition process from the X-ray circuit to the transfer, storage, and remote assessment of medical images through the Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS) and describe the components of the medical imaging informatics workflow. Students assess quality assurance programs and analyze quality control tests on imaging equipment to ensure consistent high-quality radiographs.
