RESP 1500Intro to Respiratory Therapy3
This course is an introduction to the respiratory therapist’s role as a member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team with an emphasis on the scope of practice including duties, infection control, responsibilities, and qualifications of a respiratory therapist. Students will examine the history of respiratory therapy from conception to its current goals and standing in the healthcare industry. Students will be introduced to healthcare organization structure, management, finance, and regulatory agencies. Students will be introduced to the psychosocial aspects of patient care and ethics in the profession. Students will apply the gas laws and physics as they relate to respiratory therapy. Course Fees: $225.00
Students will complete an in-depth study of the anatomy and physiology of the cardiopulmonary system, including ventilatory physics and mechanics, gas diffusion, physiology of internal and external respiration, oxygen transport, carbon dioxide transport and elimination, ventilation / perfusion relationships, and the neurological control of ventilation.
Students will learn the theory of equipment, procedures, and related concepts for patients requiring general acute cardiopulmonary care. In addition, students will gain an in-depth understanding of medical gas administration, humidity and aerosol therapy, safety systems, and patient assessment. Students will develop basic respiratory care skills necessary to enter the hospital environment.Course Fees: $40.00
This course is the laboratory section of Respiratory Therapy I. Students will practice respiratory skills and simulate scenarios prior to practicum rotations. Students will demonstrate patient assessment, oxygen systems and medical gas administration, aerosol and humidity therapy, infection control, and basic care of the respiratory patient.Course Fees: $150.00
This course provides supervised practicum clinical experience in Respiratory Therapy working directly with patients to practice and refine skills learned in the previous classroom and laboratory settings. Students will rotate to clinical sites to practice basic respiratory therapy skills in patient care under the direct supervision of licensed respiratory therapists. The student pays an additional course fee.
Students will gain and apply knowledge of the general principles of pharmacology, basic terminology, drug action, dosage, adverse reactions, and drug toxicity of medications utilized in the treatment of patients with respiratory disorders and diseases.
This course builds on the foundational concepts that students learned in Respiratory Therapy I. In this course, students will explore more advanced concepts of respiratory therapy modalities including respiratory failure, arterial blood gas analysis, and airway care.Course Fees: $225.00
This course is the laboratory section of Respiratory Therapy II. Students will apply more advanced concepts in respiratory skills and simulate scenarios including respiratory failure, arterial blood gas analysis and airway care.Course Fees: $150.00
This course provides supervised practicum clinical experience in Respiratory Therapy working directly with patients to practice and refine skills learned in the previous classroom and laboratory settings. Students will rotate to clinical sites to practice the intermediate skills of respiratory therapy including respiratory failures, arterial blood gas analysis, and airway care under the direct supervision of licensed respiratory therapists.Course Fees: $225.00
Students will learn ventilator classification, methods, principles and operational characteristics of equipment. Students will apply theory and techniques with various equipment involved in the initiation, maintenance, and discontinuation of mechanical ventilation used to manage adult patients. Laboratory experiences will provide a variety of simulations with various equipment to correlate lecture content with practical application.Course Fees: $150.00
Students will complete a detailed review of cardiopulmonary disorders and disease pathology and the role of respiratory therapy in the management of these diseases. Students will correlate the diagnostic testing and treatment modalities of respiratory care to these disease processes. This will allow students to integrate respiratory assessment and treatment of the cardiopulmonary disease states as well as the physiologic response to cardiopulmonary diseases.
This course builds on the concepts that students learned in Respiratory Therapy I and II. In this course, students will learn additional critical care concepts of respiratory therapy including advanced ventilation modalities, ventilator graphics, troubleshooting the patient-ventilation system, ventilator adjustments to achieve optimal ventilation and oxygenation and non-conventional modes of mechanical ventilation.Course Fee: $225.00
Students will focus on the principles of care for the pediatric and neonatal patient with respect to respiratory-related diseases or abnormalities. Students will review anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and assessment of the pediatric and neonatal patients and their application to cardiopulmonary abnormalities and diseases. Students will also be introduced to perinatal and prenatal respiratory care concepts.
This course is the laboratory section of Respiratory Therapy III. Students will learn and practice respiratory skills and simulate complex scenarios prior to practicum clinical rotations. The course will provide practical laboratory experience in advanced modalities of ventilation, ventilator graphics with practical experience troubleshooting equipment and the patient-ventilation system. Students will apply concepts of equipment adjustments to achieve optimal ventilation and oxygenation in critical care simulations. Student will apply non-conventional modes of mechanical ventilation during simulations of critical patient care.Course Fee: $150.00
This course provides supervised practicum clinical experience in Respiratory Therapy working directly with patients to practice and refine skills learned in the previous classroom and laboratory settings. Students will rotate to clinical sites to practice more advanced critical care concepts including advanced ventilation modalities, ventilator graphics, troubleshooting the patient-ventilation system, ventilator adjustments to achieve optimal ventilation and oxygenation and non-conventional modes of mechanical ventilation under the direct supervision of licensed respiratory therapists.
In this course students will focus on techniques and theory necessary for the evaluation and treatment of the critical care patient, including arterial blood gas analysis and hemodynamic measurements as they relate to the physiologic effects of advanced mechanical ventilation in the respiratory compromised patient. Students will also examine various diagnostic testing modalities that assess the overall health of a patient.Course Fee: $226.00
This course provides supervised practicum clinical experience in Respiratory Therapy working directly with patients to practice and refine skills learned in the previous classroom and laboratory settings. Students will rotate to clinical sites to practice entry level skills in all scopes of respiratory therapy under the direct supervision of licensed respiratory therapists. Students will be expected to demonstrate the identified skills associated with a fully functional respiratory therapist and pass a competency-based exam at the end of the semester.
This is a comprehensive summation of the Respiratory Therapy Program. Students prepare for successful completion of the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) examination for the Registered Respiratory Therapist credential. Students will develop and refine the analytical and test-taking skills necessary for passing the NBRC credentialing examinations. Students will be required to pass a comprehensive exam based on the NBRC matrix for current board testing. Students will present comprehensive case studies and participate in group activities that will integrate skills, knowledge and professionalism in respiratory therapy practice. Students articulate skills learned throughout college in application of their portfolio to both job applications and general education practices. Students create a post-graduation plan and apply financial planning and transfer or career-readiness tasks in a way that supports their personal goals.Course Fees: $190.00
