In this course, students participate in group instruction and performance on various instruments in an ensemble setting. Students gain an appreciation of wind ensemble music through performing and listening to musical literature, focusing on original works for wind instruments from the 20th century. Students with prior wind, brass, or percussion experience are encouraged to inquire. Some instruments are provided.
Students explore the jazz idiom, both through the big-band and combo experiences. Students practice the skills necessary to improvise and to become completely familiar with the jazz style as well as to listen knowledgeably to jazz music. Students with prior saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, guitar, or percussion experience are encouraged to inquire.
Students sing in a choral ensemble. The choir performs a wide variety of choral literature from many historical periods. Membership is open to anyone. Performances are required.
Membership in this chamber vocal ensemble is by audition, and all students with a background in singing are encouraged to audition. Students are exposed to a variety of choral music and will work to perform at a highly polished level, learn to sing in languages other than English, and will learn to sight sing new music. Knowledge of other languages and excelling at sight singing is not required to audition. This group may be involved in some limited touring within the state and region.

In this course students will focus on the history and literature of American popular music from circa 1920 to the present. Students will develop strategies for listening to the sounds of popular music idioms and identify instruments, formal structures, important musicians and personnel, and stylistic differences between genres of American popular music. Students will compare trends in popular music to those of classical music and jazz. Students will analyze aesthetics, lyrics, and historical contexts of exemplars of American popular music. Students will compose songs in American popular music idioms.
Students gain an appreciation for small instrumental chamber ensemble music through performing and listening. This course combines group instruction and performance on similar instruments in an ensemble setting. The musical literature focuses on original works for string instruments from various stylistic periods in music history. Students with prior string instrument experience are encouraged to inquire.
