17 courses with the subject CSD, each shown exactly as we captured it from the college's catalog, with every element we hold. Where the wording looks broken, that is our reading of the catalog, not the college's text.
CSD 6010Fundamentals in Basic Research Designs3
Students will gain understanding of how to design studies in CSD along with mentored participation in a lab with a faculty member. Assignments from the course will overlap with but will not be limited to the classroom course and will include separate assignments in the lab. (3credits, Lab rotation 1)
CSD 6012Foundations in Clinical and Applied Research Designs3
Understanding of how to design studies in CSD along with mentored participation in a lab with a faculty member. When possible, lab assignment needs to be with a faculty member conducting clinical/ applied research studies. Assignments from the course will overlap with but will not be limited to the classroom course and will include separate assignments in the lab. (3 credits, Lab rotation 2)
Understanding of preliminary, traditional descriptive and inferential statistics used in CSD research including elements of data analysis, data processing, data organization and learning the use of Statistical software.
This course will explore ethical principals in research and teaching. Students will understand the significance of human subject protection in CSD research and the process of application to the Institutional Review Board (IRB). Can be taken when designing a study in order to develop own IRB application. Ethical dilemmas faced in higher education during research and teaching will be discussed.
CSD 6120Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) in CSD: Teaching Critical Thinking using Innovative Practices2
This course is designed to educate new generations of academics to teach basic and clinical concepts in CSD using practices beyond classroom lecturing. Creativity in designing material that allows students to be motivated in learning will be encouraged. Finally students will examine the current literature in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in order to establish effective practices in CSD education and related fields at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
CSD 6140Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) in CSD: Theory to Practice2
The field of CSD is one where basic research lends to applied research, and applied research can lead to change in clinical practice. Building theoretical foundations from findings of basic research can lead to accurate application of applied research in practice. While these guidelines are set up for best practices in the clinical field in CSD, academics often struggle with a) teaching how to connect theory and practice to students and b) disseminating research findings in a way that is accessible to clinicians in the field. This course will address these issues in teaching and mentoring in the field of CSD as well as the mechanism of disseminating of research findings to various audiences.
CSD 6160Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) in CSD: Career Preparedness Post-Graduate School2
There is evidence in the field of CSD that it is seldom that a graduate from a Ph.D. program understands one’s career options. This course is designed to get an in depth understanding of the different career choices post Ph.D. with a focus on general expectations in order be able to pursue each. Non-academic pathways included when in alignment with student interest.
CSD 6200Non-parametric and Non-traditional Statistics2
Research in CSD often entails working with limited numbers of participants with clinical disorders who do not represent a normal distribution. Students in the program who are interested in clinical research and may study small numbers of participants will benefit from this course, which focuses on statistical decision and treatment of non-normal distributions, small groups and limited numbers of participants. This course will provide an overview of non-traditional statistical methods used for clinical studies involving non-normal distributions and small Ns.
CSD 6300Instrumentation and Software for CSD Research2
A number of research tools used in CSD research involve the use of complex instrumentation (hardware) and software. This course will be useful for students interested in pursuing an area in CSD that involves collecting and analyzing research data that requires specialized equipment and instrumentation. The course will focus on basic understanding, navigation and maintenance of instruments and software used in CSD research. The course will also emphasize methods of problem solving that can be generalized across a variety of research methods involving instruments. Please note the specific instruments included in the syllabus will vary depending on student needs identified at the time of course offering.
CSD research can involve the use of open software using complex coding to build sophisticated and tailored experiments and analyzing and displaying data in innovative ways. This elective course will incorporate basics of programming and trouble shooting that can be applied to a variety of programming languages. The course will also focus on specific programming languages selected specifically for the students taking the course at the time it is offered, and therefore will vary each time it is offered.
CSD 6400Introduction to Collaborative Interdisciplinary Research3
Communication Sciences and Disorders is a complex discipline that draws from a number of basic and clinical sciences. This leads to a variety of complex questions in the field, which are best solved through interdisciplinary research and teamwork. The aim of this course is to familiarize students with the nature of interdisciplinary research, the opportunities and challenges that come with it and how to address them for a successful research program when working with a team of scientists from various disciplines.
This course will examine the current knowledge and research about neurobiological and behavioral perspectives in communication sciences. Students will explore literature from animal and human studies to understand underpinnings of communication processes.
CSD 6440Special Topics in Communication Disorders3
This course will examine the current knowledge and research about neurobiological, behavioral and clinical perspectives in communication disorders. Students will explore literature from animal and human studies to understand underpinnings of communication difficulties.
CSD 6500Special Topics in Collaborative Interdisciplinary Research3
Example: Genetic Basis of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) This course is designed to understand research about communicative, cognitive, swallowing or feeding processes that draws from several basic and clinical sciences. It will examine variety of complex questions in the field, which are best solved through interdisciplinary research and teamwork. Topics in this course may include but not be limited to genetic, behavioral, physiology, neuroanatomy, neurobiology, immunology, therapies and other interventions in communicative, cognitive, feeding or swallowing processes.
This course is dedicated to developing, conducting and completing an independent, individual and research study CSD by doctoral students that will be deemed a dissertation by a dissertation committee of at least three faculty members. The dissertation committee chair is required to be a full-time faculty member in CSD at Molloy University. The requirements to complete the course successfully are to complete and defend a dissertation proposal as approved by the dissertation committee. The dissertation proposal will be required to be presented to the faculty in CSD. Students in the doctoral program must repeat this course until all requirements for this course are completed. Prerequisites: CSD 6000, CSD 6010, CSD 6012, CSD 6020, CSD 6100, CSD 7100 or Program Director approval.
