ENV 1020Foundations of Earth Systems Science3

The Earth functions as a set of interacting components from the lithosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and atmosphere. In this course, students will learn what is meant by a systems approach to earth and environmental sciences and how the Earth systems are a large set of cooperative, self-regulating processes driven by thermodynamics. The course will also discuss how these processes contributed to early evolution of life on the planet and how modern day processes such as climate change are impacted or amplified by natural feedbacks.

ENV 140OUR WORLD AND ITS FUTURE: OUR NATIONAL3

PARKS SYSTEM AND IT’S CENTENNIAL The National Park Service System in the United States is mandated by congress to preserve our national natural and cultural resources for future generations. National Parks around the world have modeled their national park systems after the U.S. system. Urban Parks, a relatively new addition to the traditional Parks, have been described as the “laboratories” or “templates” or how ecological restoration methods or techniques can foster a rebirth of the vibrant and dynamic ecological systems impacted by the urban landscape. This course will identify several diversity themes: diversity of pollution issues in urban environments; diversity of urban biological species/ ecosystem types and the diversity of restoration techniques begin implemented over the last 30 years in a relatively newly established urban National Park Unit; both successes and failures. Satisfies General Education requirement.

ENV 2240Conservation Biology3

During the 3.6-billion-year history of life, Earth has become filled with a spectacular variety of lifeforms. But loss of the biological diversity is now one of the most rapid forms of environmental change in the modern era. This course covers the causes and consequences of biodiversity loss and prepares students science‐based careers in Conservation Biology. The class begins by exploring why biodiversity is so important and valuable, including the intrinsic, relational, and instrumental arguments commonly used to justify conservation. The class then turns attention towards the main causes of biodiversity loss, focusing on how practitioners mitigate these impacts. The final portion of the course trains students in the most common models, tools, and techniques that are used to conserve biological diversity, including reserve design, population viability analysis, sustainable harvest models, ecological economic analyses, species distribution modeling, meta‐ population models, and more. Field Experiences will be required. 3 hours lecture weekly, plus field experiences.

ENV 2250Air and Water Pollution3

An introduction to the basic principles of pollution. Students will discuss pollution issues from local to global scales, learn how these have been handled historically, and gain an appreciation for emerging contaminants. The course will focus on the transport and impacts of pollution in ecosystems, and how scientific studies are used to improve environmental conditions.

ENV 2260Limnology3

Limnology is the interdisciplinary study of inland waters including lakes, wetlands, ground. water, and streams. This lecture portion of this course will serve as an introduction to the geological, physical, chemical, and biological processes that form and maintain these aquatic systems. Environmental threats to these systems will also be covered. Students will gain hands-on field and laboratory experience sampling aquatic systems, measuring and interpreting important limnological variables and identifying aquatic organisms during the laboratory portion of the course. 3 hours lecture weekly.
