Basic principals of palliative care are presented within a quality of life (QOL) framework. Palliative care nursing care combines caring, communication, knowledge, and skill. Clinical issues to include expert assessment skills and aggressive pain and symptom management as well as the psychological, social, and spiritual care of patients and families experiencing a life threatening progressive illness will be discussed. Caring for the dying means not only "doing for" but also "being with". Students will be provided the opportunity to use introspection to clarify their own feelings related to the dying process. The Adult/Geriatric Patient (4 Credit Hours) This course provides the opportunity to gain knowledge of the management of mental health conditions with the adult and geriatric patient populations. Disparities across the two populations will be a component of the course. Culturally centered, collaborative care will be emphasized in the preventive care and management of mental health disorders. Total Credit Hours 100 Doctor of Nursing Practice ted Nursing Practice with a Concentration in Nurse Executive (DNP) Doctor of Nursing Practice- Post-Master's 2 Nurse Executive Janice Hawkins, Program Director The Doctor of Nursing Practice program is designed for nurses that are seeking a terminal degree in nursing practice. DNP-prepared nurses are equipped to serve as clinical experts, change agents, and advocates in addressing healthcare in our nation. Specific areas of focus include: 3 advanced practice skills, healthcare policy, organizational and systems leadership, interprofessional collaboration, evidence-based research, 3 healthcare technology, informatics, and patient advocacy. The DNP program at ODU is fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate 3 Nursing Education (CCNE). The Nurse Executive role prepares top level nurse executives for leadership 3 positions in a health system. The program outcomes are consistent with the American Organization of Nurse Executive guidelines for nurse executive 3 practice. Content focuses on executive leadership skills, working with 3 vulnerable populations, fiscal and human resource management, quality magnet achievement, emerging technology, and organizational research in 2 clinical issues. Students participate in executive internships throughout the program in their home area. 4 To graduate from Old Dominion University’s DNP Program, a student must have successfully completed all required course work, including prerequisite 3 courses of NURS 800 and 809, an evidence-based research project and 3 all clinical practicum. Students must successfully complete 1000 hours of supervised clinical practice. The DNP program provides a minimum of 560 clinical hours within four practicum courses. MSN courses with a supervised clinical practicum component will be considered for transfer credit toward the total clinical hour requirement. A review of MSN transcripts or course 3 descriptions/syllabi will be used to determine whether clinical hours are acceptable for transfer. Students entering the Nurse Executive DNP program, 1 who require additional clinical hours, will be advised of their options by the 4 Program Director.
