EHS 403Environmental Microbiology
& Vector-Borne Diseases Lec. 3./Credit 3. The goal of this course is to provide a basic understanding of the functional diversity of microorganisms in the environment in relation to human health, microbial interactions with pollutants in the environment and the fate of microbial pathogens in the environment. This course will also explore zoonotic and vector-borne diseases of current importance in Public Health, and the role that animals play as reservoirs and hosts. Topics covered include microbial environments, disinfectants & antibiotic resistance, detection methods of microbial pathogens, bioaerosols & communicable diseases, applied (food) microbiology, bioremediation, water quality, sewage treatment, vector-borne illnesses, animal reservoirs, pest & insect vector control strate- gies, pesticides. Prerequisites: General Education requirements, BIO 105, BIO 106, BIO 304, or permission from instructor.
