PHM 400Foundations of Epidemiology Lec. 3./Credit 3
Students will gain foundational knowledge of the basic principles of epide- miology including definitions, logic, and the use of the epidemiologic method to elucidate factors influencing health and disease. Students will explore epidemiologic methods in clinical research and contemporary medical care research, particularly in comparative effectiveness studies and statistical approaches to big data. Prerequisites: MAT 205, PHM 404; Course Substitu- tions: MHA 610 may substitute for this course.
PHM 402Foundations of Public Health Lec. 3./Credit 3
Students will gain foundational knowledge of the concepts and the impor- tance of public health as a science and its goal of maximum health for all. Students will gain a thorough understanding of public health promotion and disease prevention strategies especially relating to underserved, at-risk populations. Prerequisites: none.
PHM 404Introduction to Biostatistics Lec. 3./Credit 3
This course provides practical training in the computation, interpretation and application of descriptive statistics as we as univariate and selected multi- variate inferential statistics. Students will also be introduced to statistical analysis software that they will be able to use to analyze secondary data sources to determine significance between selected variables and draw relevant conclusions. Students will also understand the difference between statistical significance and clinical relevance and be introduced to literature review. Prerequisites: MAT 205; Course Substitutions: MAT 305, POL 346, OR SOC 346 may substitute for this course.
This course will serve as an Interprofessional collaborative experience, driven by discussion and multiple forms of active learning to unite and apply the principles learned from the foundational coursework. This course may provide an opportunity for community involvement. Prerequisites: PHM 400, PHM 402.
PHM 408Current Topics in Public Health L ec. 3./Credit 3
Students will discuss and apply the foundational principles of public health to a particular topic in public health. Special topics in public health will be relevant based upon current infectious and/or chronic diseases as they relate to the overall welfare of the public. Different topics will be explored each semester. Prerequisites: none. Course Substitutions: none.

This course introduces students to international health and development issues related to public health. Students will investigate the social, economic, political, and environmental determinants of global health inequity, and the programs and policies used to address it. Prerequisites: none.
